Your fingernails can do a lot of things. They can be kept short or grown very long, painted or done nail art with, and lots more. Unfortunately, dirty fingernails seriously limit your chances of 1. doing any of the above, and 2. looking hot. So if you want to know how to properly clean your fingernails, just read on
Steps
Step 01
Get any hard dirt out from under your nails with one of those sharp nail cleaners that sometimes come with nail clippers, or something similar. Be very careful cleaning your nails with sharp objects-you can sometimes hurt yourself. Be very thorough-get every speck of dirt out from under your nails. Also being in a well lit room helps you see the dirt in your nails much easier.
Step 02
Once the underside part of you fingernails are clean, get the other parts clean. Use a clean toothbrush and soap and water. Scrub your nails hard, and all over-including underneath your nails. Don't worry about getting nail polish off-that comes later. When you're finished, wash your hands to get rid of the soap and dirt, pat your hands dry.
Step 03
Now, using a strengthening nail polish remover and cotton buds/wipes, scrub your nails hard to get rid of every scrap of nail polish left on your nails. Start from the base of the nail and work up, not forgetting to do the sides. Survey your nails afterwards for any more nail polish.
Step 04
Soak your nails in a bowl of warm, soapy water for about three minutes. Not your hands, just your nails. Make sure the water isn't too lukewarm or scalding hot-a good temperature, somewhere in between. Be patient and talk to someone or watch T.V while your nails are in the bowl.
Step 05
Wash your hands again, this time very thoroughly with lots of soap and warm water. Pat them dry, don't rub them, and rub on some rich hand cream that smells good and is really good for your skin. Cut your nails if you keep them short, or file them if you're growing them. Make sure the nails are all completely even. Finish off the look with a neat coat of clear polish. Or if you have some nails that are shorter you can wait until they outgrow themselves and complete these steps then. If you are looking for an extra fancy look, finishing your nails off can be any design such as flowers, or fancy patterns.
Tips
- Don't bite your nails. Biting your nails weakens them, gets highly addictive, and looks tacky. Paint your nails with clear polish so they taste terrible, keep them short, or get a beautiful manicure so you won't want to bite them.
- Protect your nails. If you paint them with a proper colour, make sure to sandwich the layers between a coat of clear polish. Re-apply the clear polish every other day, and wear gloves when doing jobs such as cleaning.
Warnings
- Be careful with cutting and cleaning your nails. Don't cut them right back to the quick so that they're sore and bleed, and don't stab the nail cleaner right into the flesh. Be careful.
- Nail polish can get a bit sticky at times. Practice painting your nails, and paint them on a rag. If you're terrible at it, get a friend to do them for you.
- When smoothing, and cutting back cuticles, take care in not jabbing your skin, as it will hurt and look different then the rest.
- When applying nail polish remover make sure that you don't try to sniff it as it is chemicals and can damage your sense of smell.
